If you’ve read any higher-level math, you will have come across sentences of the following form:
“We first consider the prime counting function \( \pi (n) \) and note that…”
“…it suffices to work with the restricted connection on \(U\), which we also denote by \( \nabla \). For every \( Y \in \Gamma ( E|_U) \) we have…”
“First we show that every family of connections on all tensor bundles satisfying…”
Why do math people say “we”? This is not a math-specific phenomenon by the way (though it is most prevalent in math, in my experience) – even empirical-science researchers use “we” in their work. It’s not just an over-use of the word “we” either – math people abuse the shit out of the passive voice (“The formula is given by” etc). What gives? One of my teachers in high school told me it was cause math people are pretentious (she is not wrong, they very often are!) but I couldn’t bring myself to settle on this conclusion.
During the summer after my freshman year I got really into Minecraft and in turn very into architecture.
